From the Ask Amy column in LA Times Tuesday:
Dear Amy: In a recent column, you answered the question of a 12-year-old girl who said she and a friend got pushed into a “mosh pit”. What in heaven’s name is a mosh pit? Curious Betty
Dear Curious Betty: Picture you and your friends at a Neil Diamond concert. Just as he launches into “Cracklin’ Rosie,” there is a commotion up toward the front. Suddenly people decide to leave their seats, mash themselves up toward the stage in a circle and launch one another into the center of the crowd. Basically , that’s a mosh pit. They can be fun, but scary too – certainly for a 12-year-old.
It’s interesting where Neil’s name will pop up! Has this really happened at a Neil concert: launching one another into the center of the crowd?
been to a Neil Diamond concert…well at least I’ve never seen a “launch” at one of Neil’s concerts…the Stones I’d give her…roflol!
The second Billy Joel concert we attended this year had the makings of a mosh pit. We had seats in the 7th row, but about an hour into the show, security allowed hundreds of people to stand at the stage. We then moved up to the third row. I never sat the whole night and was totally absorbed. Joe told me later that he had checked to see where the nearest exits were! During “We Didn’t Start the Fire”, it went nuts; and, he said he was nervous. I was clueless, having SO MUCH FUN. Some kid in the aisle and I made eye contact……he leaned over about five people to slap me five and wanted me to go in the aisle. I’m telling you, I’m laughing hysterically as I write…such GREAT memories.
When we saw Dylan a couple of weeks ago at an outdoor venue, we were crammed in front of the stage with hundreds of others. Joe was getting nervous again. Dylan, however, has the most reverent audience I’ve ever witnessed……very young, too! Everyone is in awe. And, if they’re not in awe, they are stoned……still! I swear, if we were drug-tested, we would have failed….just from STANDING there!! It was a blast. We were VERY happy to be there and put everything in the laundry when we got home! 🙂
As much as I ADORE our man and his shows, I do believe that the opportunity for mosh pits is long gone!! 🙂 JUST A SHOW would be wonderful, though……I miss Neil.
Have a good one! Nicki
….SuperDiamond.
Theirs is the whole mosh-pit scene, no?
them sometimes, or it seems that way as I get older, but this person definitely sounds confused.
